And I Shall Sing - SATB Choir
Text by Marian Partee
The themes considered for this work included mentorship, being there at the start of something, being part of a greater community while maintaining a sense of self, and transitional moments in life. In order to create a truly unique work, I asked writer Marian Partee to compose an original text that might combine these ideas into a narrative both meaningful on a personal and universal level. And I Shall Sing is about finding your voice, listening to those that uplift and encourage you, and overcoming obstacles in order to become your true self.
The piece opens with solo voices, each expressing a feeling of insecurity. The music continues, somewhat apprehensively, as the choir sings, “You broke the silence with your song.” The individual begins to trust in the guidance of a mentor and finds a venue for true self-expression within a community. The music builds to the moment of realization that we are not alone on this journey and that we are “travelers side by side.” Although it is not a straight path, we can depend on others to get us back on track when the we falter. The text also proclaims a responsibility to speak for those who are still lost and cannot speak for themselves. The piece ends with solo voices again, only this time they sing with confidence, knowing they have the unconditional support of those who guided them through their journey.

CAI Performs And I Shall Sing in Virtual Concert
With so many choirs unable to perform together during the 2020 pandemic, Choral Arts Initiative lead the way in producing a virtual concert involving masks, distancing, and recording outdoors. I am encouraged by their perseverance to produce beautiful music despite unprecedented obstacles.
Here you can also listen to Marian Partee and me talk about the piece in a brief pre-concert video.
